The challenge
After the earthquake in Cali, structural engineers could not keep up with inspections. Residents did not know whether their home was safe, informal photos carried no weight as evidence and connectivity was intermittent.
The solution
A free, open source PWA for preliminary crack triage: it captures the photo with GPS, orientation and a certified timestamp, rates the risk with AI corrected by NSR-10 rules and produces a tamper-evident PDF report.
What we built
- Works offline and stores up to 50 captures to sync later
- Rules engine based on NSR-10 and FEMA 306 that adjusts the AI risk level
- PDF report with a SHA-256 hash as evidence for authorities or insurers
- Bring your own AI key or use a public fallback service
- Public heatmap of the affected areas
- Educational gallery of crack types
Results
Versions 1.0 and 1.1 released under the Apache 2.0 license
54 test suites and 19 formally verified correctness properties
The project
A social impact project built in response to the emergency in Cali. Anyone can photograph a crack and get a preliminary risk assessment, even offline, with a report that works as evidence for authorities or insurers. It does not replace a professional inspection: it helps prioritize where engineers should go.
Architecture
A Next.js 15 offline-first PWA: captures are stored in IndexedDB and synced to Supabase (PostgreSQL with RLS and Edge Functions) when the signal returns. The AI proposes a risk level and a deterministic rules engine based on NSR-10 and FEMA 306 corrects it before the SHA-256 signed PDF is generated.
